It is essential for Japan to better preserve its many historic sites in order to educate its citizens about the past and increase tourism.

Visiting historic sites is one of the best ways to understand how people lived long ago. Castles, old homes, and temples, for example, give us a sense both of the ways people lived their daily lives and how they thought about things. Seeing people's actual living conditions and the objects they used has much more of an impact than words one might read in a book.

Better preserving historic sites will also increase tourism. In particular, when places are listed as World Heritage sites, they attract huge numbers of people. The money tourists spend at hotels and other facilities greatly stimulates local economies.

Although it may seem expensive to preserve historic sites, these costs are far outweighed by the benefits to education and the tourism industry.
